It just isn't possible to continue to be a part of the club now that I've moved some two hundred miles away, to Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. So, for most intents and purposes, the original object of this blog has reached its natural conclusion. Let me tell you a little about the club I started and, then, the club I leave behind.

On 1 November 2005, I instituted the first meeting of what would become the York Garrison Wargaming Club. There was three of us and we went to the pub.

Last week, YGWC had three sessions, one each on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It has a membership of more than fifty wargamers and far more than that attending regularly. It has a large, active committee led by the brilliant Ben Wagner who has stuck to his guns through challenging times and who, far more than me, is responsible for the club's current glory.

In fact, Ben's current plans for the club are how I'd like to end this phase of the blog.

You see, quite a long time ago, I painted for Ben my vision of the ideal club: a group that could afford to buy or rent its own permanent venue to be a place for events, tournaments, competitions and perhaps its own little retail corner. I fondly imagined even, perhaps, a licensed bar...

Now, I need to make it clear that I wasn't planning for this idea. It was, to me, a pipe dream: a fantasy that was possible in some weird alternate reality but not in York.

Last time I looked, Ben believed that he was two-thirds of the way to having a club income sufficient to make renting their own, permanent venue on a nearby commercial park. As well as the thrice-weekly meetings, the club has monthly all-day events and has plans that make me believe that YGWC is going to be an exemplar of wargaming clubs and what they can achieve.

Which brings me to the end.

Sort of.

Because whilst I've moved away from York, my own involvement, inspired by Ben, has taken a step in a fresh direction. I have recently been appointed a "Castalain Knight" of the Gaming Clubs Network (that's a regional representative to you and me), so my hope is to take what I've learned from YGWC and from networking with other club leaders, hobby veterans and the worthy Knights Council of the GCN to enable as many people as I can to start wargaming clubs of their own, or to help existing clubs fulfil their own visions.

I don't want to make every club into a clone of YGWC. The circumstances in York meant that they were able to take the club in the direction they wanted, and that's the crucial thing. So I'm going to be visiting local clubs over the next few months, talking to hobbyists and finding out what they want from local wargaming.

I'll report back what I discover here and, of course, to the GCN. If you'd like to help or participate, just drop me a line!

Woo! Progess!

You learn, after a while, not to get too excited about apparent progress. But it is remarkable to see York Garrison now. With fifteen members on our books and a handful of new attenders who haven't yet qualified for "member" status, we're making enough money regularly to be a month ahead on our rent (unheard of!).

We've had an AGM (a proper one, with elections and motions and minutes and everything...) and even (drumroll, please) a website. Yes, you can now find us, officially, on the Internet at http://www.yorkgarrison.co.uk. And if you go along there, you'll also find the details of our first major event: Ten4Ten.

Now, we've done one Ten4Ten already, which was a great success. The idea is that we offer ten hours of wargaming for ten pounds: that's a big chunk of wargaming. Easily time for two big games, or three smaller ones, plus lunch. It's also a great opportunity for a really elaborate campaign of some sort and, this time, we're doing Inquisitor.

Now, those of you who know me will know that I'm a huge Inquisitor fan (in fact, see my other blog, charting progress of the development of the new Inquisitor 2.0 rules), so the New Secrets/Old Lies campaign is dear to my heart and I hope it'll be a roaring success. We'll see.

However, having said all that, there are still things about YGWC that worry me somewhat. For a start, so many of our members come as part of a pair. We've got a pair of twin brothers; a pair of friends who might as well be brothers, and a father and son. These "dependent members" are great in one way: when one comes, the other comes - two for the price of one, as it were. But it also means that if just one person's away, another person is also away more often than not. So in these dependent members we can find the potential for great income loss should they fall away.

The key, therefore, is to seek a healthy mix of dependent and independent members. And I have to admit that we're also doing pretty well on this side, too.

There are two other populations that offer great benefits and great drawbacks that must be balanced: university students and members of the Armed Forces. Both groups tend to be excellent and regular attenders... but only for a limited period of time. Because the end of a course or the next posting can come all-too-quickly and a good friend disappears to the other side of the world. I'm happy to have one of each type actually on my committee at the moment (in fact, one of them has just taken over as Leader, allowing me to focus on the money side as Treasurer), but I have to keep the imminence of departure uppermost in my mind with one eye on stocking a back-up.

There are two other advantages to this type of member, though: first, they are easy to reach. Noticeboards and newsletters are widespread in both universities and garrisons and bases. If you can get your details into the news, you'll reliably reach a lot of people. The other advantage is connected with their departure: they carry news of your existence far and wide and they often encounter fellow wargamers heading in your direction and push them your way... if you're a good club! And if you can recruit enough over time, you'll enjoy the benefits of having an extended family of former members around the world, spreading the good news and expanding your numbers.

Whether York Garrison has reached the end of its journey is far from clear, and I suspect that this blog is far from over. But for now, this is me, signing off...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wargamingclub.blogspot.com/2009/04/woo-progess.html' title='Woo! There are some challenges still dogging my efforts, though, so I thought I share some of the problems I've faced along the way and how I have or hope to deal with them.

1. Committee. It's obviously a truism to say so, but recruting volunteers for the committee will always be a pain in the backside. Often, the volunteers are the last people you actually want to have controlling the purse strings. And more often than not, you just can't get the volunteers to start with. I've been lucky to have had one excellent volunteer and I don't mind saying that having just one other committee member has made the world of difference. I intend to hassle other members to volunteer for the other jobs at the next AGM.

2. Time. We began in the new venue running from 6pm to 9pm. But it quickly became apparent that this wasn't quite right. For students and workers, making it for 6pm was just too much of a stretch and, even for homeworkers like me, getting the working partner into the house, feeding the horde and getting out of the door in time to set up for 6 was a nightmare. We settled on 6.30pm to 9.30pm with much gratitude to the staff of Burton Stone Community Centre who arranged their shifts for our convenience. They're great people.

3. Money. This was a tricky one. I wanted the weekly cost to be low enough not to discourage potential members, but high enough to cover the expenses with enough surplus to get ourselves some insurance. But, preferring to err on the side of cheapness, I allowed the club to grow increasingly in debt to myself, hoping that membership would pick up enough to cover the costs. At the most recent EGM, though, the members themselves proposed an increase in fees to comfortably cover expenses, pay me back and accrue sufficient surplus to purchase insurance. I agreed to a motion to raise fees by £1 per head until the AGM in April. So fees are now £4 for non-members, £3 for members and £2 for committee members.

In other news, my determined new Secretary has also started something big. After I challenged him to put his money where his mouth is, he brougth in the materials to build a Space Hulk board and we're now working out some proper rules for what I'm tentatively calling HulkHammer: a version of Warhammer 40,000 with a Space Hulk twist.

Watch this space for more!

Change or Die!

When we moved to our temporary home, we knew it could only last for so long. But six months later, we're still, somehow, clinging to life. Our membership is a feeble 6. We have three tables and a few boxes of terrain and, frankly, we really want to play someone new.

So it's time for a change.

A former member did sterling work in scoping out a new venue and letting me know where it was with some details. I took a while to get out to see it but, once I did, I was very impressed. Of course, it isn't free. Our current membership can just about afford it if everyone turns up every week. If I can drag in two or three new members then we might just manage a small surplus. This will go towards our PLI.

Lawrie Stewart, vice-president of the Gaming Club Network, fortunately lives not too far away and has been enormously helpful. He's even going to come along an validate all our paperwork in a few weeks' time. All we have to do is survive until then!

Anyway, if you're in the York area and fancy some wargaming action, then the Burton Stone Community Centre is our new home every Wednesday night from 6-9PM. Entry fee will be £2.

Back in Business!

Never forgive, never forget, never surrender!!

The York Garrison has risen from the ashes of ignominious defeat to new life!

Well, almost. We're back. But we're smaller. Perhaps that was our mistake from the start. We thought we could be the Cadian 8th when in fact we were better suited to being the Tanith First. Small clubs are agile and responsive, able to take venue changes in their stride. They rely upon free or very cheap venues, low membership costs and a small but dedicated group of friends who can be relied upon to be regular attenders.

As we expanded before, we made the mistake of assuming that all of our members were as dedicated as we were and that they'd follow us loyally to a new venue and a new night. But we were wrong. And as our original membership slipped away, we failed to attract new members and gradually the club imploded.

Our new venue is small, simple and free. But it has the huge advantage that it is within easy striking distance of at least half of our first gang of members. And we've also moved our meeting night back to what it was before: Tuesday.

Here's a thing: Tuesdays are best. I don't know why, but they are. I think it's the mid-week effect. Wednesdays ought to be good, too, but with Heroes dominating the viewing schedule of geeks nationwide, that just isn't going to work right now. But having the meeting on a Tuesday gives people something to look forward to, even on dull and dreary Mondays.

We're still looking for a new venue. But at least now we can take our time and find one that suits us at a price we can afford. In the mean time, we can enjoy the hospitality of St Mary the Virgin, Strensall. Come along: Tuesdays, 7pm-10pm.

And it all goes horribly wrong...

Where does a wargaming club lose its way? The fact is that people who start these clubs don't start them because they like running clubs. They start them because they like playing wargames. But when running the club starts to get in the way of enjoying playing wargames, something has gone wrong.

I like playing wargames. I'd play wargames every day if I could. But I also love spending time with my family. My wife has no interest in wargames. My children are too young (yet!). And some nights, whilst I wanted to play wargames, what I really wanted was to spend time with my family. But I couldn't. Because I had the key to the hall and people would be waiting and I was obliged to show my face etc etc...

That, of course, is what a committe is for, God love them. So I handed over they keys, stepped down from the post of President and became the Secretary instead and all as once more well with the world.

But all was not well, for there was an obligation to make haste from our venue for a new one. And no new venue was to be found! We thought we'd got one and then we didn't and then we did and then we didn't. It was three months of stress as the pressure to shift our terrain-laden backsides to a new home grew and grew.

Finally, we found a new home and very grateful we were too. But it wasn't very convenient. And it was a bit pokey. And the new President decided that we should change nights to Mondays.

Whether any of those factors made the difference, I really don't know. Personally, I don't think it was any of them. I think the club had failed to sustain its early momentum mostly due to a half-hearted President (me) and bad timing (our change in venue came at the end of an academic year). Anyway, attendance began to drop dramatically and, by early September, we were down to barely half a dozen people on a good night. Our new venue had offered us free occupation on the basis of bar sales (it had a bar!) which just weren't materializing and we were invited to pack our boxes and make haste once more.

It was the death knell for YGWC.

But I will NOT go quietly into the night, I will rage - rage against the dying of the light!

Or rather, I will take stock and re-build. Because I know that at least six members of the old club are all within a short drive of my own house and a new potential venue. It's tiny and it's due to be knocked down... but it's also due to rebuilt three times the size with extra storage space! And the vicar (it's a church hall) happens to be a friend of mine.

So whilst our funds and terrain have been dispersed and our membership depleted, this is not the end. Small clubs are more nimble and responsive, able to shift nights and venues to suit their small membership. So YGWC is not dead. It is only sleeping. It will return...

I love it when a plan comes together...

Well, if you've been following this 'blog - and I know a few people have - I need to warn you that we're nearly at its end.

I've still got a few hiccoughs to sort out - the storage thing is one, as is the quest for an alternative venue - but my quest is almost complete. Club membership has now exceeded 20 people, with an average weekly turn-out exceeding 12. We even managed something approaching an AGM (it involved me shouting at people while they tried to ignore me and get on with playing their games, but I'm assured that that is in the best tradition of wargaming all over the world).

Oh sure, my committee mostly let me do all the work (we'll see how long that lasts!) and there're still jobs to do but the club is there, established. We've crossed the sort of member threshold, with a great cross-section of older and younger gamers, that means that we won't be crippled at the start of the university academic year.

So what've I learnt along the way? What advice can I offer to anyone who wants to do what I've done? Here're a few suggestions:

1. Find a venue. Ultimately, the YGWC grew out of me deciding that, come what may, I would be at Hurst Hall, every Tuesday, from 7.30-10.30PM every week and if anyone wanted to join me, they were very welcome.

2. Join the GCN. When it comes to advertising, there's no better outlet than your local GW and the GW Community Forums.

3. Never give up! There were a fair few weeks when it was just me. Then it was just me and one friend. Then me and three friends. Then all of a sudden I found myself collecting the club subs and asking "who're you again?"

If you're trying to start a club of your own, feel free to drop me a line. At the very least I'll send you encouragement.

Happy gaming and may all your dice roll 6s (except when you need 1s)!

The Battle is Almost Won!

It's been a while since my last post (almost 2 months! sorry about that), but a great deal has happened in that time.

The York Garrison Wargaming Club has established itself with a regular clientele and we now have a membership approaching 20, with about 12 players regularly attending every Tuesday. I've started collecting subs to fund improvements and investment in the club infrastructure, the club Yahoo! group is being effectively used to manage lifts, games, campaigns and role-play and we've even set up a Discussion Forum (which is, as yet, unused).

We've completed our application process for GCN affiliation. This was slowed by one of my club councillors getting a job down South, so I had to get the paperwork re-signed, but Lawrie Stewart, Secretary of the GCN, is a hero and got our club approved in principle following sight of the club rules. Hopefully, I will soon receive the membership pack that will include the CRB forms for our councillors.

Our main shortfalls now are - as implied - infrastructure.

We have a few boards, donated by a key member (thanks, Postie!) and a good number of tables. But we really need more tables and more scenery. But before we can get those, we need MORE SPACE!

Storage is becoming the crunch issue. The managed of the Hurst Hall Community Centre has been more than helpful - he's acquired a couple of old wooden football dugouts that could be converted to be storage - but they'd still have to be outside, potentially exposed to some pretty Yorkshire weather. There is a fabulous storage space inside the Hall, but it's almost entirely occupied by the Rainbows and the Little Fishes toddler group.

So what are my options?

1) Weather-proof the dugouts -
Advantages: cheap(ish) and uses existing resources
Disadvantages: at least a day's work

2) Move venue -
Advantages: more space, more storage
Disadvantages: more money, may lose members

3) Assassinate the Rainbows -
Advantages: more space within existing resources
Disadvantages: illegal and not in keeping with a "children friendly" policy

*sigh* I guess I'd better dig out the DIY handbook, eh?

Big, Unexpected Victories!

Phew! Just when you think it might all implode and end in a disappointing mess of non-attendance and failure, things take off unexpectedly!

Having missed a couple of meetings due to work commitments, I was very disheartened on my return to discover from my partner-in-crime that there had been no-shows for two weeks running. But just as I was wondering whether it was time to call it a day, one of the other local wargamers, whom I had been badgering to attend with no luck (the timings were too late for him), suddenly appeared along with a car-load of eager followers. Not only that, but he had brought no fewer than three gaming tables with him!

All of a sudden, I'm struggling to accommodate this many people! It's great to report that they seemed to enjoy themselves, even though not everyone got to have a game, and they all agreed that they would come again as and when they could. The main sticking point was a combination of location (a little out of their way, being out of the city) and transport (one car between the lot of them). But I hope they've been sufficiently impressed with what they saw to return as they are able. Frankly, I'm happier to see turnout fluctuate from one week to another, because it gives me time to work on the terrain question.

This is my major sticking point, now. Originally, I was confident that I could find the storage space for whatever we needed, but I beginning to worry that I was optimistic in that respect. We desperately need more terrain and playing boards, but have we got room to keep it?

I must find my way down to the Community Hall tomorrow morning to negotiate with the manager. I'm lucky enough to have good contacts with most of the major users of the hall, but it simply comes down to the question: do we have the room to do what we want?

Now, there are storerooms in the Hall. At least one of these is perfect, but has been claimed by the joint chaos of the Brownies and the Toddler Club. The other, I've not been able to peek into, so I am hopeful. Worst case, there are two sheds outside. One of which is sufficient but far from ideal. The other may be better, but is the manager personal storeroom, so I don't know if he'd share it. The last option is to arrange our own storage by providing a shed or garden storage chest type thing of our own, but there's a limit to how many of these can be attached to one Community Hall...

We'll see how things go tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I've finished the latest draft of the club rules to distribute tomorrow night and I will try to get two other over-18s to agree to take the interim jobs of "Committee Member" so that we can get ourselves sorted for full GCN affiliation. God willing, that will mark our chance to really push ourselves forward as the only affiliated club in 40+ miles.

Let's hope that my latest victory doesn't turn out to be Pyrrhic.

Medium Victories

Membership has expanded to a mighty six! This divides evenly between grown men who should know better and Sixth Formers who will soon be distracted by more important things. Like women. And beer.

Still, if I can recruit some female players and get in a six-pack we might still retain their interest...

I've also started a Yahoo! Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/garrison_wargaming. So called, because we're technically still just the York Garrison Wargaming Club, or YGWC. Personally, I'd like something a bit snappier, but on the other hand this does have a certain "Ronseal" quality about it.

Next week will be a bit of an experiment, as (a) we're going to play something other than Inquisitor and (b) I won't be there, except to drop in and say "hi" and check that no one's set the place on fire. Talk is strongly in favour of a 40K in 40 Minutes evening.

Soon, we're going to have to broach the tricky subject of money. The hall is free, but we're going to need some income if we're to develop our own resources in the form of gaming boards, terrain, hobby materials and suchlike. This is where our status as a Garrison club comes to the fore. Okay, only half of our membership comes from York Garrison personnel or dependents, but that's still no reason not to ask the Army for money. And although cash is often hard to prise from the MoD's fingers, we're approaching the time of year when organizations start to notice and unexpected underspend and get desperate to give money to anything worthwhile that takes the trouble to ask.

So ask, I shall.

We also need more than six people. Six is good, of course, but I hope to increase that by more than 200% in the next six months. And for that, we need publicity.

Small Victories

Meeting number 2 saw us achieve a 50% increase in our total turnout and we managed a whole 3 people!

So that's me, Moz and Steve.

But I brought minis and rules and Steve brought green felt and terrain and I introduced them both the illicit joy that is Inquisitor. We enjoyed it so much that when we looked at our watches, it was a quarter past eleven, we'd missed Last Orders and run over our official occupancy time of half past ten.

But it's a definite start! I just need to keep plugging the existence of the club and it'll stand or fall on its own merits.

That said, "plugging its existence" is proving tricky when I'm not exactly overburdened with free time in which to get stuff done. Unusually, it was my boss who prompted me to widen my advertising base (he tries to pay attention to what his underlings do with what little time is left to them; I used to think it was sweet, but now I suspect he's just working out when is a good time to keep me in late).

I reckon a poster campaign is in order. My contacts at the local school can put a few up, I'm sure. Likewise, the local library and, of course, the venue itself should carry a poster or two to raise awareness. We're in a military Garrison here in York, so it's worth contacting the local Headquarters to see if they will publicize the club in their weekly Orders and, if Garrison personnel attend the club, we may even be elligible for funding!

I'm assured that cracking the venue is the hardest part. The venue isn't perfect. It's too far out of the centre for that. But it's got enough going for it (it's free!) that I think it's worth persevering into the New Year and seeing what happens.

I could crush a grape...

...it's so exciting! I went to see the proposed venue this morning and it really is ideal.

There's oodles of storage space, a fully supplied kitchen (bring your own food and drink), £4m of PLI and next to no restrictions on use (beyond normal civilised behaviour, naturally). There's a separate area for hobycraft and they can even supply simple materials like glue and cardboard.

There's parking, a bus-stop and a pub all within a two minute walk (there's even some parking right outside the door) and, best of all, there's absolutely no charge for its use!

The only downside is that the venue is some 20 minutes out of the centre of town, making it a bit of a hike for those who live on the far side or in the centre. But it's on a bus route right from the middle of town and what they have to spend on travel they'll save on hire fees.

All (all!) that remains is to gather enough people together on its first meeting night to guage interest and to get feedback on how others feel about the place.

This is where the nascent club may fall at the first hurdle.

And we're off!

Yes, after a long delay, it seems that things might actually be starting to happen, and I have GW to thank for it!

Changes to the shop opening hours and working practices have meant that the Tuesday Night Veterans' Club in GW York (and, I think, across the country) has been axed, with only Thursday night left for in-store gaming. Unfortuantely for GW, a good number of the Veterans had organized their home and social lives around Tuesday night gaming. So rather than move nights, they moved locations and have been meeting in another player's home.

Meanwhile, I made a few inquiries and found a venue supported by a national organization that was able to offer us space and time for free! It's right off a main bus route and within staggering distance of the local hostelry (for Over 18 members only!).

It's not a done deal, however. Haste, I have found, is a critical motivator in getting such a venture off the ground. So I'm going to see the venue in detail tomorrow to ask all of the relevant questions and poke my nose around. Using the GCN guide as my roadmap, the questions I'll be asking are:

Is there storage space for boards (and scenery)?

Can we use the kitchen and, if so, do we have to provide our own materials?

Does the hall have its own PLI or do we need to get some?

Can we sell refreshments?

Can we do painting and modelling?

What are the restrictions on use?

Meanwhile, I have contacted a previous employer who still has my CRB certificate (shame on them!). The plan is to drag in as many potential members as possible, not to start gaming straight away but to discuss a way ahead for the club. Points of discussion will include:

How often will we meet?

What games will we play?

How much should we charge and what should revenue be put towards?

If there's money involved, do we need a committee?

And depending on what answers we get to all of the above points:

Will we sell refreshments?

Do we want to run other events?

Who will be the committee members?

Do we want to join the GCN?

Of course, this could all still die a quick death. Turn out needs to be drummed up NOW and then maintained at an appropriate level. And if it survives beyond November (first meeting should be 1 Nov 05), we'll need to get organized sharpish if we're to sustain our momentum.

Well, it's off to drum up that support for me! Wish me luck!

And a month later...

Well, it's almost a month since my last post, and I thought you might like an update:

Progress on the school club has been shot down as my contact got fobbed off by the Deputy Head. I intend to take direct action and contact the Head of English, especially as I've discovered they're studying Tolkein on the GCSE syllabus. However, it'd be rude to do so without first getting my contacts in the school to agree to the course of action, and they're still tied up with their exams, so I don't want to distract them just yet.

Meanwhile, I'm desperately trying to move forward my idea to start a club that's more than just a venue to play standard wargames. I'm keen to deconflict with the YWS so that we don't end up fighting for the same audience, so I've started The Holy Order of the Emperor (stupid name, but I was trying to come up with something that could encompass lots of systems, and there seems to be both an Emperor and a penchant for religious fanaticisim in a lot of systems).

The object is for the The Holy Order to be as much an on-line community as it is an actual gaming club, with a focus on the fringes of conventional gaming. To that end, it will focus on Kill Team, Border Patrol, Specialist Games and exploring new options for conventional games - whatever the players come up with: new armies (like Eldar Exodites or Warhammer Cathayans); new mechanics (alternating phases) or unusual environments (jungle fighting, Cityfight, boarding actions...).

There will also be a strong emphasis on the physical side of the hobby: i.e. models, painting and terrain.

If you read this and you're interested, email theholyorder@hotmail.co.uk.

Meanwhile, I've got a couple of buckshee days off owed to me and plan to pop into York and hand out flyers at GW - if they'll let me! Ask permission from the management before doing anything like this in your local Hobby Centre.

Twiddling my thumbs...

Whilst I'm not posting any new developments, it may look as if I'm doing nothing. But I'm not.

That is, I'm not doing nothing.

I'm doing something.

I'm waiting.

Now, I appreciate that, to the outside observer, the difference between "doing nothing" and "waiting" may too fine to differentiate. But waiting is more dynamic. It implies that something is going to happen in due course, or that someone else might be doing something.

In the short term, what it means is that I haven't been to either YWS or to Veteran's Night yet. So if I can link Maurice in with the game with Steve, we'll be onto a winner. After that, all we need is to be meeting regularly and we call ourselves a "club" according to the dictionary definition!

So, you see, I'm doing nothing dynamically. Apparently, Monday nights from 8pm is the time to go along for a game of 40K. I will see how my other half feels about my going along this very evening (not to play, but just to get an idea of who's there, what they're playing etc). I have in mind either to throw in my lot with YWS or - if it doesn't seem that it would severely damage the club's viability - to start a "seed" club, parented by YWS. Which would be a better option will depend upon those who go to the club.

Meanwhile, there's more good news on the horizon in the form of my old comrade-in-arms, Steve, whom I've just heard has made his own way up to North Yorkshire. As I haven't communicated with Steve since he left the Adeptus Arbites Yahoo! Group, then his appearance is either a tremendous coincidence or he's stalking me.

However, Steve is a hugely experienced wargamer and modeller with a perfect temperament for running a club (massive ego, great intelligence, no social life) and a remarkable capacity for strong ale. Getting him on-side would be terrific... I guess I'd better hope he doesn't read this 'blog, then, hadn't I?

School's out...

Thanks to Jack for reminding me that, what with GCSEs coming up, now won't be the best time for starting a School Wargaming Club to distract them.

Of course, although I was only vaguely aware of this (GCSEs being thankfully no more than a distant memory for me and still a long way off for my son), it actually works in my favour. Because it takes a while to set these things up, to arrange the agreements and rules and parameters, and aiming for a start date of September seems like a good plan to me.

The other advantage is that my wife is considerably more supportive of this idea than of seeing her kitchen invaded by marauding teenagers on a weekly basis (funny, that). I should add that its not just a fear for the best china that motivates my dearly beloved. She sees me helping to set up a school club as much more of a real contribution to the community. She thinks there aren't enough good clubs and activities run in state schools and if we stay in this area then this school might even be the one that my little boy goes to one day...

Yet another distraction...

I thought I had covered all the bases, I really did.

I contacted people I knew in the areas, and they said there were no wargaming clubs in York. I checked with GCN, and they have no clubs recorded in York. I asked on on-line forums: no one knew of any gaming clubs in York. I even went to the local GW and asked them if there were any gaming clubs in York. They said that there weren't.

There is.

York Wargames Society has, by all accounts, been there for quite a long time. Long enough to have their own wargames conference and trade fair, the Vapnartak (which presumably means something in Viking). GW York even takes a trade stand there, so you'd think that they would know it existed!

So, anyway, I've contacted them. This could be the end of the project, of course. After all, I don't want to be setting up a competing club, because then everyone loses out. However, I know from experience that if you find a wargaming club that doesn't have good links with GW, that doesn't register with GCN and which doesn't make in-roads with local schools to garner fresh members, well...

Look, to be blunt, they're usually inhabited by hairy geography teachers who wax lyrical about the Sumerians or Napoleon's Legions or the Confederate Cavalry. When I mention Warhammer, they get all superior and start sneering at "primitive, turn-based gaming systems" and "the fallacy of science fiction wargames". They get hostile if I mention Warhammer: Historical and if I should so much as breathe the word "Bloodbowl", they start fashioning surprisingly realistic mock-ups of Rick Priestley* and Tom Kirby**.

Now, I'm not saying for a second that York Wargames Society is like that at all. For a start they do LARPing (Live Action Role Play) and normal RPGs (Role-Play Games), including Warhammer Quest. But part of me is kind of hoping that they don't support GW games. Because however much I would welcome players of historical wargames, personally I find them a bit dull.

But this is a potential learning experience, so I thought I share it with you.

*Author of the world's most successful wargames... for GW.
**GW Chairman and the man who made those games the most succesful in the world.

Oops...

I said I'd put up a link to the Gobstyk's guide to starting a club, so here it is:

http://www.gobstyks.co.uk/About-us/starting-up.htm

I haven't read it yet, but I'm sure it's very good.

Going off at a tangent...

Well, I've got three more people interested in coming to the club... but they're all doing GCSEs!!

However, I'm a great believer in turning a problem into an opportunity. It so happens that all of those I've contacted so far are at the same school or live in the same general area near York. So an alternate direction suggests itself: an after-school club.

I'd not considered this before, because - as I said - I'm not really in this for running a youth club. But some schools have after-school coordinators, and I wouldn't mind acting as an advisor if there's interest. Frankly, once there's a room, some big bits of wood and a box or two of terrain, an after-school club should run itself... shouldn't it?

Well, I guess it's off to the GW School Clubs page to find out more...

As an aside, I was very conscious, when contacting Sam about this idea, that I was an adult contacting a minor over the Internet. This is dodgy territory and I was keen that should Sam mention this to a parent or teacher that there not be any concern that I'm a weirdo (I mean, I play wargames with toy soldiers, for heaven's sake - I must be a bit odd, musn't I?). As a result I was careful not to ask Sam where he goes to school, but instead to ask him to pass my email address to an appropriate teacher and for him/her to get in touch with me direct.

Word to the wise, eh?

A Minor Problem...

So I've contacted this chap, Sam. via The Conclave and got a positive response as well as the news that his friend Dave is interested. But there's an issue. Sam's 15. Okay, he turns 16 in August and, frankly, I don't really care. But it raises an interesting question:

I'm following the advice in the Gaming Club Manual and starting small. I plan to have games in my garage and painting in the kitchen, followed by pizza or somesuch in the living room for those who want to just shoot the breeze about wargames and suchlike.

But what if most of those who're interested are on the spotty side of their majority? I feel a bit like I'm setting myself up to hang around with a bunch of teenagers. Not that there's anything wrong with teenagers, but... No, hang on, they're teenagers! Of course there's something wrong with them!! What have I done!?

Calm... calm...

The answer seems pretty obvious, really: I need some other adults around. These will dilute the atmosphere of hormones and hairgel, provide me with some moral support and make me feel less like the one running a youth club. I determined immediately that I would not start this club unless there was at least one other over-18 involved.

CLUB RULE 1: At least 2 adults must be present at every meeting.

Apart from anything else, it gives me someone to go to the pub with afterwards...

Now there's this bloke Maurice, from tech support. But he's based south of the city and while I hope he'll come along, I doubt he'll be able to make it every week. I need to get someone else on board. Preferably someone who already has a Criminal Records Bureau clean bill of health, like me.

Now, where can I find a CRB-checked adult with an interest in wargaming...? Looks like I'm off to Veteran's Night this Thursday!

Seeking wisdom...

Whatever my personal assessment of my organizational abilities, life has taught me that it's always worth trying to learn from the experiences of others. "Time spent in reconniassance is time rarely wasted", as my old instructor used to say.

So it was off to Games Workshop's clubs page. There, I was able to download the Gaming Club Manual and the GCN's Introductory Handbook.

Now, these are both good documents, but the GCN's (incidentally, their website is here) is much more for established clubs joining the GCN. Even the GW document assumes that you've already got the basic format of "three or more people meeting together regularly to pursue a hobby or interest". I didn't even have that.

At this point, chance intervened. My PC at work broke and I called tech support. It took him until the next day to turn up, but when he did there was a moment of double-take as we each realized that we had met before at GW York's "Veterans Night". I took the chance to ask him if he fancied the idea of an independent club and he was enthusiastic.

Motivated, I headed on-line to look for others in the area.

I already knew of at least one from The Conclave and so it was back to there (it's the official forum for the Inquisitor game) that I went. Fortunately they have a fixed thread called "The Index of Where We Live" and I was able to email another N Yorks local to see if he was interested.

He is! And he has a friend who wants to play, too!

Progress...

A shot in the dark...

It's pretty simple, really.

I like wargaming. That is, I enjoy building and painting armies of small metal and plastic soldiers and marching them to battle other people's armies of small metal and plastic soldiers. I also like building the battlefields over which they fight. I even like talking about wargaming and coming up with new ways to play them.

So when I moved to my new house in North Yorkshire, I was keen to find a local club to test my mettle against other, similar enthusiasts. Knowing that Yorkshire has more Games Workshop Hobby Centres than any other area of the UK except London, I was hopeful. But my hopes were ill-founded.

So it falls to me to make the attempt to start a Wargaming Club for the York area.

I should state from the outset that I've never done this before, but I'm generally reckoned to be pretty good at organizing things, so I think I stand as good a chance as anyone of getting it off the ground. However, it occured to me that - stand or fall, win or lose - there might be some mileage in starting this 'blog to inform others out there of what I'm doing, how I'm doing it and what works and what doesn't.

So if you're thinking about starting a club yourself, pop in occasionally. I make no promises about how often I'll be posting, nor of how long I can maintain any attempt to start this thing, but I'll do my best to be constructive, honest and useful.
